The snake distribution method sorts players by skill rating from highest to lowest, then assigns them in a snake pattern: team 1 gets the best player, team 2 gets the next, … team N gets the N-th pick, then team N gets the (N+1)-th pick, team N-1 gets the next, and so on. This mirrors how balanced snake drafts work and produces the most even teams on average.
Building a full rec league? League Pro lets players register, tracks skill ratings over time, and can auto-balance teams each season.
Twelve players rated 9, 8, 8, 7, 7, 6, 6, 5, 5, 4, 3 and 2 split into two teams of six that each total 35, so both average 5.8.
Use the team balancer whenever you assign players to teams: pickup games, house leagues that form new teams each season, placing free agents, camps and clinics, or a company sports day.
Have two or three people rate each player separately and average the results, since one person's view is easy to argue with. Use last season's stats where you have them. Players tend to rate themselves generously, so ask how long they have played and at what level. Put new players in the middle at 5 until you have seen them play.
Balanced ratings are a starting point. Check that each team has the specialist positions it needs, such as a goalkeeper or a pitcher, and that coed teams meet your roster minimums. Fix those by swapping two players with the same rating so the totals do not move.
Snake distribution deals players out strongest first and gives the same, most balanced result every time. Random with skill check shuffles players who share a rating before dealing, so you get a different set of teams on each run while the averages stay close.
Players are sorted by rating and dealt to teams in a snake order, strongest first, so each team gets a similar mix of strong and developing players.
Use a simple 1 to 10 scale and rate relative to your own league. Consistency matters more than precision: a 7 should mean the same thing for every player.
Between 2 and 10 teams. If the players do not divide evenly, some teams will have one more player than others.
Balance the teams first, then swap players of similar rating between teams to reunite friends. Swapping like for like keeps the teams even.
