About single vs double elimination

In single elimination, one loss ends your tournament. In double elimination, you must lose twice: a second defeat in the Losers Bracket ends your run. The Losers Bracket champion faces the Winners Bracket champion in the Grand Final.

Top seeds receive first-round byes when team count isn't a power of 2. Click any team name to advance them through the bracket.

How to use it

  1. Enter your team names, one per line, in seed order with the top seed first.
  2. Tick "Double elimination" to give every team a second chance. Leave it unticked for single elimination.
  3. Click Generate Bracket. If the number of teams is not a power of 2, the top seeds get first-round byes.
  4. As games finish, click the winning team to advance them. Print the bracket at any point.

Example

Six teams in single elimination: seeds 1 and 2 get a bye, 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5, and the tournament takes 5 games. Eight teams in double elimination take 14 or 15 games.

Single or double elimination?

Single elimination is the quickest format and needs the fewest games, but one bad game ends a team's day. It suits large fields and limited field time. Double elimination guarantees every team at least two games and does a better job of finding the best team, at roughly twice the number of games. If teams have paid for a tournament day, double elimination or a consolation game usually goes down better.

How long will the tournament take?

The number of rounds is the number of times you can halve the bracket: 3 rounds for 8 teams, 4 for 16, 5 for 32. An 8-team single elimination is 7 games. On one field with one-hour games that is 7 hours; on two fields it is 4 hours, because the quarterfinals take two time slots and the semifinals and final take one each.

Seeding tips

Seed from regular-season standings so the strongest teams cannot meet until the later rounds, and so the byes reward the teams that earned them. For a social or one-day event with no standings, tick "Randomize seeding" for a blind draw.

Third place

A single elimination bracket decides first and second. If you want a third-place finisher, have the two semifinal losers play each other before the final.

Frequently asked questions

How many games are in a single elimination bracket?

One fewer than the number of teams, because every game eliminates exactly one team. 8 teams play 7 games and 16 teams play 15.

How many games are in a double elimination bracket?

Either 2N − 2 or 2N − 1 for N teams. The extra game happens when the team from the losers bracket wins the first final, which forces a deciding game.

How do byes work?

When the team count is not 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64, the highest seeds skip the first round so the second round has a full set of matchups.

How should I seed the bracket?

Seed by regular-season standings so the best teams meet latest. The standard pairing is 1 v last, 2 v second-last, and so on, which is what this generator uses.
